The “real” answer as stated above, is that there are really two parts to this question, the one I mentioned and the other question which is: “Should you ever do this?”. The answer there is obviously that you should not because it is too easy for someone to spoof the original form which creates the security issue for the user.

My issue here is your question is not whether or not the transaction is secure your question asks if the posting is “..any less secure than one starting on HTTPS?”. Semantics maybe but that is the crux of your question.

Your own summation supports my answer of “NO” to your question. “The transaction IS secure from an HTTP form to HTTPS, however setting forms up in this manner is not ideal because someone could spoof the HTTP form and get your user’s passwords.”

This is good advice for anyone looking to do secure transactions on the web and I hope your post will open the eyes of some developers to the problems that can occur when using HTTP as a front end to an HTTPS site/page.
